Session Description: Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Community-based learning are emphasized to improve the quality of care among diverse populations. Hunt School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is the first dental school in West Texas aiming to serve a Spanish-speaking community that has always been considered underserved. Cultural and linguistic competency and IPE are among the foundations of HSDM curriculum. The majority of the dental public health curriculum is taught inteprofessionally with Foster School of Medicine. Both dental and medical students work in interactive interprofessional teams didactically and in their local communities. They start their dental/medical journeys with a three-week intense interprofessional community immersion and accelerated conversational Spanish practice. Community Assessment Projects, Clinician Cultural Competence Media Campaigns, Spanish Health Promotion Videos, IPE Case-Based Activities, and a Simulation-Based Accountable Care Organization Exercise are among the community-oriented interprofessional curricular components. This pioneering model aims to build culturally and linguistically competent healthcare providers with interprofessional collaborative capacities.
