Session Description: ASTDD created Guidelines for State and Territorial Oral Health Programs (S/TOHP) in 1994 and has updated them several times, including in 2021. This document serves as a roadmap and guidance for developing, operating and evaluating S/TOHP. A companion document, ASTDD Competencies for State Oral Health Programs, was developed in 2009 and updated in 2022 to describe non-clinical skills needed to carry out the roles and activities in the Guidelines. During this workshop, the facilitators will provide an overview of the two documents, discuss the changes and rationales behind the updates, show how they have been used by S/TOHP and in the peer support program, and demonstrate how to use the associated tools. Attendees will be asked to relate any previous experiences with the documents, interact with the facilitators and other attendees to use the tools and create action plans to use them in the future.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the 10 Essential Public Health Services to Promote Oral Health framework for the Guidelines and what resources are available to help implement the Guidelines.
2. Discuss how the ASTDD Competencies relate to accomplishment of the ASTDD Guidelines roles and activities.
3. Demonstrate how the Guidelines and Competencies can be used for strategic planning, assessing program/staffing strengths and weaknesses, and creating scopes of work, job interview questions, mentoring/staff development plans.
4. Create an action plan for ways to use the Guidelines and Competencies in your program.
