Reducing Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions – A Success Story Southern Area Oil Operations (SAOO) is an operating Admin Area under Saudi Aramco, and contains some of the largest hydrocarbon producing and processing facilities in the world, alongside support services. SAOO works proactively to meet its hydrocarbon processing demands in a safe and sustainable fashion. Chief among SAOO’s sustainability measures is its GHG emissions, which SAOO monitors very closely. SAOO proactively completes projects, and implements activities and initiatives, as part of the company’s efforts to reduce GHG emissions and carbon intensity. With this backdrop, SAOO set its 2021 GHG reduction implementation plan in motion by targeting GHG Scopes and categories. In 2021, SAOO was able to successfully reduce its GHG emissions, when compared to 2020 emissions, as a result of reducing Scope 1 emissions such as combustion of fuel gas in boilers and gas turbines, flaring, and fugitive emissions through conducting Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs. SAOO also lowered its Scope 2 emissions by reducing its consumption of imported electricity. Finally, SAOO achieved offsetting reductions of emissions through completing green projects, and planting trees. This paper describes SAOO’s pioneering approach to reducing its GHG emissions in 2021, details the undertaken approach, and showcases the success that SAOO achieved.
