Session : Oil and Gas Operations: What's Up with Methane
1166550 - Upstream Natural Gas Methane Emissions Reduction Strategies – Confluence of Mandatory and Voluntary Initiatives Including Regulation, Target Setting, and Responsibly Sourced Gas Certification
Methane emissions from the upstream natural gas sector are under increased scrutiny as governments and industry consider pathways for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the most severe effects of climate change. EPA recently released proposed regulations that aim to greatly reduce methane emissions throughout the oil and gas industry. When promulgated, these regulations will lead to real, cost-effective reductions in methane emissions. Voluntary emission reduction initiatives have been gaining increased attention and industry participation. Moving forward in the United States, emissions reduction strategies will likely include consideration of both mandatory and voluntary initiatives. This is a joint presentation between Geosyntec Consultants and MiQ, an independent, not-for profit foundation with the aim of reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector through certified gas. The presentation will include regulatory updates, an overview of carbon management strategy and voluntary initiatives in the oil and gas sector, and an introduction to the MiQ standard and gas certification process.
