Research Associate
University of Utah/Genetic Science Learning Center
Rochelle C. Cassells, Ph.D., is a developmental psychologist whose areas of academic specialization include poverty and child development and parent-child separation due to migration. Specifically, her research explores the impact of macro-level factors (i.e. poverty and migration) on the development of socioemotional and cognitive processes, and the ways in which these processes shape the health and educational outcomes of disadvantaged youth. Rochelle is currently a Research Associate and Program Evaluator with the Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC) at the University of Utah. She works alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts that bring science and health information to the public in an easy-to-understand way. As part of her work she evaluates undergraduate research training programs that seek to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in science and biomedical careers, which has broadened her research to consider what role community-based participatory research plays in promoting science interest and persistence among minority individuals outside the traditional STEM pipeline. She also conducts evaluations on the engagements and educational materials being developed by the GSLC for the All of Us Research Program.
