The value of surgeon wellness and professional diversity have garnered increased focus in recent years in all areas of medicine and dentistry. This symposium will bring together a variety of experts on several topics, including burnout, inclusion as well as gender and racial diversity and discuss how they relate to residency training, career choices and other aspects of professional practice. In addition, the speakers will share thoughts on how best to improve wellness and diversity in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

Discuss the impact that race and gender have on practice patterns and other significant career choices.
Cite the signs of surgeon burnout with comprehension of the influence that residency teaching styles and shaming have on professional development.
Identify the challenges facing academic oral and maxillofacial surgeons and the consequences for resident training programs.
Explain how oral and maxillofacial surgeons can improve their personal wellness.
