Assistant Professor of Surgery, Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion

A Nashville native, Dr. Raeshell Sweeting currently serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery, Breast Fellowship Program Director and Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she focuses on breast cancer care. In her role as Vice Chair of Diversity she focuses heavily on recruiting and hiring practices medical center wide. She also serves as Program Director of the Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship and sits on the Surgical Education committee which focuses on resident education and development. She runs a Business of Medicine course for the chief surgical residents as part of this role. Additionally, she works with the Medical School and the Office of Diversity Affairs in their recruitment and interviewing efforts.
Dr. Sweeting’s research focuses on health disparities and economic implications of health care delivery.
Dr. Sweeting received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. She then worked for two years as an economist at Lehman Brothers Bank in New York City. She went on to study medicine at New York University School of Medicine followed by Surgical Residency at the University of North Carolina Medical Center where she had the honor to serve as Chief Resident in her final year. She then completed a fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology at Vanderbilt University where she now remains as faculty.
