Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Resident
University of Toronto
My name is Christopher K. Ward B.Sc DMD, and I am a senior Oral and Maxillofacial surgery resident at the University of Toronto in Toronto Ontario, Canada. Throughout my education, I have engaged in research exploring the development of both stem cells and biomaterals for applications in regenerative medicine. As part of my Master of Science, I had the unique opportunity to work alongside researchers developing stem cell lineages from human umbilical cords and exploring applications for these unique types of mesenchymal stem cells. Combining this area of interest with my current training led to the idea of harnessing the anti-inflammatory properties of these cells and their biological products as an intra-articular injection in the temporomandibular joint. Although this research focuses on exploring the anti-inflammatory effects of these cell products in the TMJ, further research could explore the potential regenerative capabilities of these cells. In addition to this field of research, I also enjoy exploring and applying developments in technology such as 3D printing, and virtual surgery, to the areas of minimally invasive surgical techniques, TMJ surgery, reconstruction, and orthognathic surgery.
