RICHARD J. SCHWAB, M.D.
Biography
Dr. Schwab is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is the Chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine. He is also the Director of the Sleep Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Schwab received his undergraduate degree from Haverford College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Schwab has, over the last few years, emerged as a preeminent investigator in the field of upper airway imaging and sleep apnea. He has developed and utilized sophisticated magnetic resonance imaging and volumetric analysis paradigms to study the mechanisms leading to sleep apnea. His research has resulted in seminal observations about the genetics, pathogenesis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. He has shown the importance of the lateral pharyngeal walls and tongue fat in the pathogenesis of sleep apnea and that the volume of the upper airway soft tissue structures are larger in patients with sleep disordered breathing than normal controls.
