In nursing education, the tendency exists to rely on lecture in the didactic environment. Current evidence limits student retention to about 5% with traditional lecture. This statistic increases to 80% when active learning strategies are incorporated into any learning environment. In this workshop, we will explore numerous strategies such as cinematography, gallery walks, patient family development, debriefing, socratic questioning and provide tangible methods to decrease content saturation. In addition to exploring these strategies, we will demonstrate actual use of these strategies and how they can be incorporated into class sessions and connected to the clinical judgment. Active learning is a critical and imperative part of developing clinical judgment. Through this workshop, faculty can engage with the presenters and peers to tailor existing teaching strategy, leaving with numerous tools and strategies to empower clinical judgment in the classroom.
The presenters will also address how to address student resistance to active learning and detail the clinical judgment process. We will also use specific NGN items, demonstrating how these items can be used to foster active learning in any learning environment.
