Debra Mardis DNP, RNC-OB, NTMNC is a nurse with 31 years of experience working for TriHealth in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is currently working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is a 60 bed unit in a Level III NICU. Good Samaritan Hospital, a partner of TriHealth, is a Level III maternity care facility for antepartum, labor and delivery and postpartum care. Debra has worked over 26 years in perinatal services, with a direct focus on labor and delivery and NICU patients. With this specialized nursing training and advanced nursing education with a docturate in nursing practice, Debra has seen the need for Safe Sleep education in her hospital and NICU. Hamilton County (the county in which Good Samaritan is located) has a high rate of SIDS incidence. Education for safe sleep given to parents is paramount in reducing SIDS in Ohio and across the nation. Debra applied an evidence-based practice quality improvement project in her NICU with positive results amongst her coworkers. Increasing safe sleep education to staff and changing the culture of gastroesophageal reflux behaviors of NICU infants will impact lives of infants sleeping safely in Ohio!
