I am a staff registered nurse with over 16 years of experience in Northwell Health North Shore University Hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
My nursing roles involve charge, labor and delivery, nursery, and certified breastfeeding counselor. My responsibilities include responding quickly in emergent situations in the delivery room, providing patient care in the NICU nursery setting, and educating parents on age appropriate feedings.
Our NICU exercises nurse led rounds so that we, the primary provider, can better understand our patient's treament plan, and could explain to parents the need for tests or procedures. This leadership role empowers us to be the voice for our babies, to advocate for them and their parents.
We implement evidence-based nursing practice and take part in numerous unit initiatives, currently with Improving Developmental Positioning by Education and Standardizing Nursing Practice. By having guidelines for nursing assessments and interventions, we hope to achieve our goal, which is to help our little ones achieve their neurodevelopmental goals, outside of the womb, into the nicu setting, and then out in the world.
