Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects up to 30% of NICU babies and is associated with both short and long term morbidity and mortality. It is therefore essential that those who care for these infants understand how to recognize AKI, how to prevent it if possible, and how to manage it if it occurs. Understanding differing forms of dialysis and their risks and benefits is key to providing this potentially life saving therapy.

Explain the different ways in which acute kidney injury can present
Demonstrate how to medically manage a child with AKI
