This presentation will review common myths and misperceptions in the care of opioid-exposed mother infant dyads. Neonatal nurses have an incredible opportunity to support families impacted by substance use disorder at a vulnerable time following delivery. Following this presentation, you will be motivated to provide non-stigmatizing, patient centered, trauma informed care to opioid-exposed dyads in the inpatient or outpatient setting.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

Explain limitations and biases in presenting existing national prevalence data in perinatal opioid use
Explore the unique stigma and discrimination surrounding pregnancy and SUD treatment
Identify opportunities for improved engagement, care, and collaboration in preparation for delivery
Discuss the unique risks to substance-exposed families in the early postpartum period, including recurrence of substance use
