As the opioid epidemic continues to escalate across much of the United States (US), maternal opioid use and consequential rates of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) also continue to rise. Family-centered care is the pillar of nursing practice in the NICU, however, nurses report difficulty in applying principles of family-centered care with families where a substance-exposed pregnancy has occurred. This presentation will describe the findings of a recent study where this complex caregiving dynamic is explored with NICU nurses from the Southeast region of the US.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
Identify potential opportunities to improve relationships between nurses and mothers with substance-use concerns.
Identify shifts in nursing care that may increase inclusive care practices and improves outcomes for families with an SEP.
Describe the relationship between the quality of nurse-mother relationships and the emotional stress of nurses.
