While it is well-known that many infants requiring neonatal intensive care have difficulty with oral feeding prior to discharge, there is little known about feeding difficulties in this population in the early months after discharge. Understanding the continued difficulties these infants face after discharge may help to guide care during their neonatal intensive care stay. The results of this study suggest that feeding problems occur in about 46% of infants in the first 6 months of life after discharge and are highly related to symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux and gastrointestinal distress.

Describe the prevalence of feeding problems in infants discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit.
Identify two factors that are related to symptoms of problematic feeding in the first 6 months after neonatal intensive care discharge.
