“We think your child has Down syndrome,” are words that parents never forget. The moments that follow are key in a Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) journey for each family. In this session, we will discuss how to best support parents following a likely or confirmed diagnosis, as well as, hearing from parents who have experienced that in a NICU. We will also discuss current care guidelines for children with Down syndrome and what the lived experience is for families with their children now.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

Describe the parent experience following a prenatal and postnatal Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) diagnosis.
Describe the parent experience following a Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) diagnosis and the intersection with a NICU stay and/or medical complications that may occur.
Identify evidenced-based recommendations for how to best support families following a diagnosis.
Discuss current AAP care guidelines for infants with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome).
Identify resources to best support families following a Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) diagnosis.
