Transcutaneous bilirubin measurements are widely used in the NICU before phototherapy, but not widely used after phototherapy discontinuation. Research shows that it use after phototherapy is accurate. Expanding the use of transcutaneous bilirubin measurements can decrease the number of painful procedures in the NICU, reduce phlebotomy to possibly reduce the risk of anemia, and save health care costs.
