In the wake of racially charged events in 2020, our NICU team mobilized to form a multidisciplinary working group with the intention of regularly addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion topics with our staff. Our beginning discussions focused on brainstorming ways to help the families who are sometimes hardest to reach during the NICU stay, related to issues including language, childcare needs, health literacy, and job demands. One piece of the many projects happening in the working group focuses on the central goal of health equity for our families, with an initial concentration on the use of preferred language, one equity-focused target during the transition to home. This group has provided us space for valuable and critical discussions as well as opportunities for improvement to support our team and improve health equity in our NICU, thereby improving the patient and family-centered care experience. We aim to continue addressing the social determinants of health through consistent multidisciplinary discussions at the unit level and beyond.

Upon completion, participants will be able to list one barrier to identifying a family's preferred language in the electronic medical record.
