(1057) Decreasing Iatrogenic Anemia in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Iatrogenic blood loss is a contributor for packed red blood cell transfusion in the extremely low birthweight infant. The extremely low birth weight infant has a very high likelihood of packed red blood cell transfusion. There is limited evidence as to what labs are required for the premature infant. An evidence based quality improvement project to change to a policy of medically indicated lab work as opposed to routine lab orders for all NICU infants resulted in a decreased volume of blood drawn.
