Roy Brown, AHIP, is education and research librarian, Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, VCU Libraries, Virginia Commonwealth University, and has been a member of the faculty of Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, VCU Libraries in Richmond since November 2010. His primary role is as a education and research librarian, where he is responsible for developing training and educational programs for campus-based and distance learners, including developing website content. He also serves as liaison to the school of nursing (SON), where over the last two years, he has become embedded and viewed as a valued resource in helping faculty, staff, and students in their academic and research endeavors. Since becoming liaison to the SON, he has been able to not only take part in teaching classes, but also participating in faculty research and grant proposals.
Before coming to VCU, he worked as a medical librarian at Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma, and as a graduate assistant at the Robert M. Bird Library at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. His professional interests are evidence-based health care, increasing access to health information especially in underserved populations, and information literacy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education from Western Carolina University and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Oklahoma. Before entering the field of librarianship, he was a National Board certified high school teacher for fourteen years in both the classroom and online settings.
