Beverly Murphy, MLS, AHIP, FMLA (she/her/hers) is currently Assistant Director, Communications and Web Content Management at the Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives where she manages and maintains the Library’s Website, marketing, and digital communication. She is also the Hospital Nursing Liaison for the Duke Health System, teaching and assisting nurses with their research needs for publication, quality improvement, performance evaluation, and graduate residency. Additionally, she serves as Liaison for the students and faculty at the Watts College of Nursing in Durham, NC.
Beverly has been a librarian for 40 years and is an alumnus of North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC, where she received a BS in Biology and Masters in Library Science. She is a Distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals and has served in a variety of capacities for the Medical Library Association (MLA) including serving as the first African-American President of the Association, an MLA Fellow, MLA News Editor, and member of the JMLA Editorial Board. In 2021, she was the first African American to receive the Marcia C. Noyes Award, the Association’s highest professional distinction. In addition to MLA activities, Beverly is active in the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MLA and the Association of North Carolina Health and Science Libraries (ANCHASL).
She is co-editor of Diversity and Inclusion in Libraries: A Call to Action and Strategies for Success. Her research interests include librarian core competencies; diversity, equity, and inclusion; health literacy; library administration; and EHR and OpenInfobutton Technology.
