The COVID-19 pandemic has upended many aspects of life around the world. As scientists have raced to understand the virus over the past year, they have benefitted immensely from open sharing of data across labs and across countries. In addition to their research value, these freely available datasets also present an opportunity to help undergraduate students better understand the ecological concepts underlying the pandemic-related news they read every day. This talk will focus on the use of open SARS-CoV-2 sequencing datasets for teaching undergraduates population genetics concepts and for developing their data analysis skills.
