Obtaining two positions at an R1 university is incredibly challenging. Start with an open and honest discussion between dual-career partners on priorities, career goals, and acceptable compromises for both partners. During the job search prioritize locations with the potential for dual career positions either at the same institution or locally. During the interview process, do not bring up the partner until an offer is made. Negotiating “creative solutions” to the two-body problem will depend on the many factors, but it is critical to ensure that the negotiated position aligns with the partner’s qualifications.
