Here we propose a new community-driven reporting format for field observations of soil-to-atmosphere CO2 flux—soil respiration, RS—data, based on engagement with a wide range of researchers and expert advisory panels in the ecological sciences. This format aims to enable FAIR data, while providing capabilities to support reanalysis through data synthesis or other analytical approaches. We present an RS reporting format that is openly available online (https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-soil-respiration) and is intended to be a dynamic document, subject to further community feedback and/or change.
