Nick received his B.S. degree in Forestry from Humboldt State University in 2015. He has worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a wildland firefighter and aviation technician and more recently for the U.S. Geological Survey as a physical science technician. Prior to his academic career, Nick worked in academic publishing and helped promote open access for published research. Nick is interested in disturbance ecology, particularly interactions between wildfire, insects, and disease in western U.S. forests. He has helped collect and analyze dendrochronological data for a variety of species in California, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, and Colorado. Nick started his dissertation research in 2016 working under Dr. Dave McWethy at Montana State University. Nick’s current research involves analyzing tree growth and resin-based defenses in disturbance prone landscapes with recent histories of mountain pine beetle activity.
