Plant Sciences, Cornell University
Marcella Cross studies plant physiology at Cornell University. She works with Douglas-Fir forest plots investigating plant health diagnostic methods. In collaboration with Dr. Taryn Bauerle’s lab at Cornell, Marcella studies the use of tree stress responses measured as electrical amperage signals to diagnose tree health. With current challenges to forests worldwide such as the changing climate, pest invasion, and threats from fire and deforestation, a better understanding of forest health is critical. Marcella is working to make a forest health monitoring device that measures electrical amperage signals to detect plant disease and stress early on -- while outbreaks are still preventable. Marcella enjoys working with youth and education outreach programs to share the importance of scientific discovery and has done research in labs in multiple parts of the world including the US, England, Spain, and Mexico.
