Dr. Herford is Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He holds the Philip Boyne & Peter Geistlich Endowed Professorship. Other appointments include Loma Linda University School of Medicine and also serves as the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Herford received his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and completed a 6-year program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas. He earned his MD from the University of Texas at Dallas Southwestern Medical School.
Dr. Herford serves on numerous committees and Boards. In 2013 he was named a founding board member of the Osteoscience Foundation (OSCF) and currently serves as Chair of the Foundation. He recently served as President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He is past president of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CALAOMS). Dr. Herford has a strong interest in trauma and is a past Chair of the North American Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Education Council of the AO/ASIF. He currently serves as Vice President on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Oral Biology (AIOB). He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
Dr Herford’s interest in research began in the early 1990’s when he started working with the late Dr. Philip Boyne. Their collaborative research together led to numerous publications and advances in dental tissue regeneration. Dr. Herford is an accomplished researcher with over 100 scientific publications and more than 200 scientific presentations. In 2009 Dr. Herford was named to the Society of Scholars at Loma Linda University. He travels nationally and internationally speaking on a variety of topics. His main research interests are trauma as well as reconstructive surgery. He has pioneered techniques in both hard and soft tissue regeneration and holds patents in soft tissue grafting techniques. He developed the first three dimensional transport bone distractor that can regenerate large segments of bone without the need for extensive grafts. His work on the use of the growth factor, Bone Morphogenic Protein (rhBMP-2) at both the preclinical and clinical level has led to increased treatment options for patients. In 2013 he received the OMFS Daniel M. Laskin Award which is given each year for the most outstanding paper published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillfacial Surgery. The paper was titled “Recombinant Human Bone Morphogneic Protein 2 Combined with an Osteoconductive Bulking Agent for Mandibular Continuity Defects in Nonhuman Primates”. In 2014 he received the Distinguished Research Award and Loma Linda University and in 2014 was awarded the AAOMS Outstanding Research Award.
Dr Herford’s current interests include utilizing technological advances to improve reconstructive treatment options for patients. Dr Herford enjoys balancing a busy work schedule with spending time with family including his wife and four children.
