Three designers working with marginalized communities will present their research and built work from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. The focus will be on landscapes in the contexts of resource scarcity, environmental injustice, and refugee settlements and how engagement techniques can be applied to the designers’ home communities.

Learning Outcomes:

Learn about the unique landscape conditions of communities experiencing environmental injustice, extreme poverty, marginalization, and other forms of vulnerability.
Acquire a palette of tested engagement techniques and qualitative metrics for landscape architects to apply when bringing members of varied global and domestic communities into the design process.
Explore current landscape architectural projects that are adapting lessons from design-advocacy work abroad to shape local, public landscapes.
Identify potential models for forming community partnerships and gaining funding for international landscape architectural projects, including design work in refugee communities.
