PhD student
University of Georgia
I am Yvette Steyn and currently doing a PhD in animal breeding and genetics at the University of Georgia. I am a South African and completed my masters cum laude in 2012 at the University of Pretoria. My thesis was on RFI in beef cattle. After graduating, I worked in the industry in South Africa for 5 years. This company, SA Stud Book, was responsible for routine genetic evaluations for most of the South African breeds of various species. This included over 20 beef breeds, 3 dairy breeds and 12 sheep/goat breeds. We also did some international evaluations for Namibia, Zambia and Brazil. Working for this company included research and development, performing genetic evaluations for industry, dealing with enquiries, creating user-friendly reports and doing extension work. Extension work was done through talks and interaction on farmer's days, personal communication, invited talks and presenting courses we designed. We also worked closely with the University of Pretoria, which gave me a chance to lecture 3rd and 4th year students from time to time.
I started my PhD in May 2017 under guidance of Ignacy Misztal. My experience in the industry has helped me look at research and the application thereof differently.
