John A. Hopper, MD, FAAP, FACP, DFASAM
Dr. Hopper graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, where he served as Co-Chief Resident in Pediatrics. Dr. Hopper was appointed to the faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1994 where he served as Associate Program Director for the Med-Peds Residency and Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry’s Research Division on Substance Abuse. From 2005 to 2008, he was the Chief Medical Officer at Brighton Hospital, the second oldest addiction treatment hospital in the United States. In addition to his many clinical and teaching awards, Dr. Hopper is an author for many publications, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Opioid Management. From 2008 to 2015 Dr. Hopper directed the Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he continues to serve as a clinical faculty member. In 2013 Dr. Hopper started Michigan’s only American Board of Addiction Medicine approved addiction fellowship, which he directed until 2015. From 2015 to 2020, Dr. Hopper was a Field Reviewer for the Clinical Learning Environment Review Program of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Hopper currently serves as Medical Director of the Chemical Dependency Unit at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan. He is Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at St. Joseph Mercy Hosptial in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
