Dr. Alverdy is a clinical gastrointestinal surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery involving the esophagus, stomach, and pancreatico-biliary tree. His research efforts focus on the molecular interactions of bacteria and the intestinal mucosal in order to understand how life-threatening infections arise after trauma, major surgery, and critical illness. By understanding the regulation of virulence among pathogens to respond to host environmental cues such as stress, ischemia, immune activation, and nutrient depletion, he hopes to combat surgical site infection. Dr. Alverdy has postulated an alternative mechanism of surgical site infection, the Trojan Horse, that includes microbial tracking of the patient’s environment, their personal microbiome, and the surgical site as a modern strategy to prevent surgical site infection.
