Dr. Pfeil graduated from the Free University Berlin (Germany) in 2001, before being selected for an internship at Kansas State University (KSU). This was followed by the American DVM and a fellowship and surgery residency at Michigan State University. In 2008, he became a Diplomate with both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Following years of sports medicine-related work, mainly sled-dogs, Dr. von Pfeil gained his third board-certification in 2016 after passing the ACVSMR exam. Based on his contributions to the field of minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, he was accepted as an ACVS Founding Fellow, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Small Animal Orthopedics, in 2021. From 2006-2018, Dr. von Pfeil worked as assistant professor at KSU, adjunct professor at MSU, visiting scientist at the University of Georgia, and as surgeon at veterinary referral hospitals in Alaska, Virginia, and Washington, DC. In 2018, he opened Small Animal Surgery Locum. He is currently mainly contracted with Sirius Veterinary Orthopedic Center and SAGE Veterinary Specialists of Alaska, but also offers locum surgery services to other private practices and universities in North America and Europe. Dr. von Pfeil also serves as faculty of the AOVet North America since 2017 and on the board of referees for several international veterinary surgical journals since 2011. He has developed, presented and published modifications to multiple surgical techniques, including development of a novel bone reduction forceps for MIO. Among his over 60 contributions to the veterinary literature is also a landmark paper on preferred treatment of CCLR, based on input from surgeons performing over 30,000 CCLR procedures annually.
