Mike Conzemius, DVM, PhD, DACVS
Endowed Professor of Surgery
University of Minnesota
Chanhassen, Minnesota
Speaker discusses how he recognizes failure in the surgical or medical management of elbow disease when speaking to an owner; he also informs them that their dog will very likely develop progressive osteoarthritis (OA). Failure is confirmed when he informs them that medical treatments only help control the clinical symptoms, and surgery for elbow is high-risk, high-cost, and not recommended. Thus, presenter finds that if he continues to repeat historical surgical approaches, his experience can be defined as excellence in failure.
