The use of animals as models of pain or nociception originate back to the late nineteeth century with the introduction of the von Frey hair aesthesiometer. These models enhance our understanding of pain physiology and allow for the discovery of new therapeutic agents that relieve pain and suffering in humans and animals. The objective of this lecture is to briefly discuss the current state of acute pain measurement in dogs and cats. Participants leave this lecture feeling confident and ready to use practical, easy, and effective pain assessment tools that can be easily incorporated into any small animal practice.
