This lecture provides the latest research on the pathogenesis of surgical site infection; rereviews the Trojan Horse Hypothesis of Surgical Site Infections; discusses the role of the microbiome in surgical site infections and anastomotic leak;present practical steps in preventing surgical site infections based on emerging science in the field; and,demonstrates the benefits and flaws of current practices (use of antibiotics, hyperoxia, skin decontamination) to prevent surgical site infections.
