The Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) Progressive Return to Activity Following Concussion/mTBI Clinical Recommendation (PRA) is an evidence-based tool used by military providers to guide service members from point of injury to return to full duty. The PRA was updated in 2021 to reflect current literature and advances in activity recommendations. It is a six-step process that emphasizes management for post-concussion symptoms, guidance for specialty referral, and physical and cognitive readiness screening. This symposium will provide an in-depth review of the PRA, discuss key changes and review current literature as it relates to return to duty.
Explain the rationale for using a PRA protocol for service members (SMs) post-concussion
Identify the key changes to the updated 2021 Progressive Return to Activity (PRA) Clinical Recommendation
Understand the criteria for progression following a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)
Identify appropriate activities at each stage of progression
Understand how to apply primary care management strategies and specialty referrals to treat concussed SMs who are not progressing as expected
