Dr. Bai’s research focuses on the occurrence, fate, and transport of emerging contaminants in the environment including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Her recent research has addressed the detection, sorption, mobility, and bioaccumulation of short-chain and long-chain PFAS in natural environments using a combination of analytical tools, field monitoring, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling. Her research aims to understand the sources and persistence of PFAS in urban watersheds and in agricultural fields and how they can affect the ecosystem and human health. She is evaluating and testing practical sampling and analysis methods, including screening techniques and continuous monitors, to better understand and regulate these contaminants.
