Dr. Kumar is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at The University of Toledo. Before coming to Toledo, he worked for Syncrude Canada Ltd., as an atmospheric physicist where he played a vital role in the design and implementation of studies to examine the dispersion of emissions. During the past 43 years, his research has been primarily focused on the development of air quality models and analysis of monitoring data, in relation to the determination of compliance aspects based on the national/local industrial/regulatory needs. Dr. Kumar has a distinguished faculty career, which is complimented by the receipt of multiple grants/contracts worth in excess of $ 5 million from industry and regulatory agencies; authorship or co-authorship of more than 400 peer-reviewed journal papers, book chapters, conference papers, and reports; editorship of two conference proceedings and a book; and the co-authorship of four books.
Dr. Kumar was the software review editor for Environmental Progress (AIChE) from1989 to 2018. He served as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Hazardous Materials (1992-2006) and EM (2005-2011). He guided and mentored over 100 graduate students in their pursuits of advanced engineering knowledge. In perspective of his contributions, A&WMA presented him with L. A. Ripperton Award for distinguished achievement as an educator in the field of air pollution control in June 2003. He is an Honrary member of A&WMA.
Dr. Kumar received his Bachelors of Science in Engineering (Honors) from Aligarh University in India (1970), Masters of Applied Science from University of Ottawa, Canada (1972), and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Canada (1978). He is a fellow member of A&WMA. He was the chairman of the Education Council of A&WMA from 1998 to 2001, which initiated a variety of projects for students, public, members, and faculty.
