982587 - 2021 Year to Date PFAS Multimedia Regulatory Update and Analysis of Its Expected Impact

With growing public and regulatory interest and a new federal administration, 2021 is expected to be an active year in regulatory developments related to environmental impacts from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This presentation will provide a summary of significant 2021 year-to-date regulatory developments in the areas of: water quality standards, air emissions regulations, and waste management requirements as they arise. While the discussion will provide documentation of a number of recent PFAS-related regulatory developments, which can serve as useful documentation, the primary intent of the presentation will be to provide some deeper analysis and interpretation in order to summarize trends in state, local and federal regulatory developments related to PFAS, with an emphasis on significant federal actions, and comparing and contrasting similarities and differences in recent regulatory activity at all levels of the regulatory community. To that end, attendees will leave with not just a catalog of PFAS regulatory developments from the first half of 2021, but a sense of what it means.

For this presentation, the authors will rely on their subject matter expertise in air quality and in water and waste management, respectively, reflecting the multimedia impacts of the emerging contaminant, and highlighting the need to understand the ways in which regulation of one media can impact another media.
