Please join us on Sunday, October 10th from 12:30 PM-1PM Central Time for the product theater, "Linking Agriculture and Nutrition: The Role of Biofortification and Food Staples in Contributing to Dietary Quality". In this talk, Dr. Howarth Bouis PhD, an International Food Policy Research Institute Emeritus Fellow, World Food Prize Winner, and Founding Director of HarvestPlus (https://www.harvestplus.org/) will describe how vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies remain a critical public health problem and adversely impact the growth and development of children, especially in developing nations. He will also describe some of the "nutrition smart" agriculture strategies, including the role of biofortified crops, that can help mitigate vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In his role at HarvestPlus, Dr. Bouis coordinated an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional effort to develop, test, and disseminate micronutrient-rich staple food crops to reduce mineral and vitamin deficiencies among malnourished populations in developing countries. Since 1993, he has sought to promote biofortification globally.

More information about Bayer Crop Science:
Agriculture is one of the pillars of human civilization, and the story of agriculture since its inception is a story of innovation: especially making plants edible, palatable, and scalable. Yet, there has never been a more important time for innovation in agriculture. Our world faces enormous challenges, from a changing climate, to limited natural resources for a growing population, and we believe agriculture is part of the solution. Bayer Crop Science is working to shape agriculture through breakthrough innovation to benefit farmers, consumers, and our planet to deliver on our collective purpose: Science for A Better Life.
So what does this have to do with pediatric healthcare providers? Chances are, you’ve done some dietary counseling for patients and parents, because our diets are inextricably linked with health. However, people from all walks of life -- from pediatric providers, to patients and parents -- increasingly have questions about how their food is produced, including questions about the role of food technologies, different agricultural systems, and their connection to health. We’ve included information in this booth on some of our most frequently asked questions and popular topics about agriculture and food technologies, and how they relate to the health of people and our planet. We hope you find it useful.
Thank you for stopping by. Please join the chat room or make an appointment with our physician-scientist, Dr. Katie Karberg MD PhD, if you have any questions or would like to chat!
