Dr. Shanti is an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his dental degree (magna cum laude) from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and his medical degree from Rutgers University. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Rutgers University/University Hospital in Newark, NJ. He subsequently went on to complete a fellowship in head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. He has also completed a two-year research fellowship in regenerative medicine and stem cell biology at the National Institutes of Health, which was sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Shanti's clinical practice is devoted to the care of patients with benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Dr. Shanti’s clinical practice is also devoted to microvascular reconstructive surgery of the head and neck following oncologic surgery, radiation injury, or trauma. Dr. Shanti currently service as the Associate Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Disease Team Leadership Committee at the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center, and is also the Vice Chair for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Shanti is involved in both clinical and translational research efforts focused on dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, benign odontogenic tumors (i.e., ameloblastoma), and the application of human gingival mesenchymal stem cells in myomucosal and nerve tissue engineering. Dr. Shanti’s research efforts have been recognized in him receiving the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Daniel M. Laskin Award for the “Most Outstanding Article Published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2006.” He has also been the recipient of multiple research grants from the University of Pennsylvania, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and OsteoScience Foundation.
