Extraction of mandibular third molars is associated with inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury. This session will analyze high-risk anatomic and radiographic third molar variables based on panoramic (Rood's) and CBCT criteria and show how it is possible to predict risk of the IAN injury, make a injury-based stratified diagnosis and treatment plan safe and atraumatic third molar extraction, if applicable. Alternative treatment options also will be discussed, and the holistic third molar treatment algorithm will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Review high-risk variables associated with third molars.
Identify panoramic and CBCT radiographic markers of close proximity of the IAN and third molars.
Describe management strategies and alternative techniques for third molar extractions.
Differentiate between coronectomy and pericoronal ostectomy.
Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to sleep at night, almost every night.
