Head and Program Director, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Disclosure: Nothing to disclose.
The purpose of this session is to share the background, history, reasons and evidence to support the use of the chemotherapeutic 5-fluorouracil in the management of odontogenic keratocysts. With more than 25 years of experience of this modality at the University of Toronto, the session will summarize the methods of application of the material as well as the outcomes accumulated thus far. The aim also is to see if other centers can be engaged to establish a multicenter trial because the initial evidence in the use of the material seems to be positive. Case presentations, immunohistochemical evidences and a matched control trial will be demonstrated.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss the biologic origins of odontogenic keratocysts and the pathways that are affected when chemotherapeutic agent 5-flurouracil is applied.
Demonstrate handling the material to pack into enucleated cystic cavities with review of recommendations regarding timing and follow-up.
Review the current research with the goal of improving understanding of the broad range of evidence that exists.
