Despite many advances in diagnosis and treatment, osteomyelitis of the jaws still presents a significant challenge to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The disease management is complicated with the development of resistant microorganisms and the improper initial management by different specialties. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons play a significant role in the surgical management of osteomyelitis. This session will discuss the pathogenesis of osteomyelitis of the jaws and explain the current classification system of the disease. The disease's medical and surgical treatments and recent advances in diagnosis and surgical planning also will be presented.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

Discuss the pathophysiology of osteomyelitis.
Explain the current classification of jaw osteomyelitis and the appropriate treatment for each class.
Review the different types of imaging, including nuclear medicine, and the best modality to help in early diagnosis and management.
Explain the different available antibiotics and the best route of administration.
Describe the role of the OMS in the management of the disease and the challenges associated with the reconstruction of the defects after osteomyelitis.
