The purpose of this session is to acquaint the oral and maxillofacial surgeon with the fundamentals of using a digital SLR camera to obtain accurate and reproducible clinical photographs. The session will begin by discussing the importance of these photographs in clinical practice. An introduction to basic photographic principles, such as aperture and shutter speed, will be presented. Participants will be shown the basic function of the digital SLR camera. Examples of specific clinical scenarios and how to best use the camera in these settings will be shared. The session also will explore pitfalls encountered in obtaining accurate and reproducible photographs with the digital SLR.

Use the manual controls on a digital SLR camera.
Review the fundamental effects of film speed, aperture speed and aperture size for photographic images.
Demonstrate various applications for the use of the digital SLR in clinical photography.
