Associate Professor
Seattle Children's Hospital
Scott Weissman, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington (UW) and the Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH). His NIH-funded lab helped the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) to track the spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae into the Pacific Northwest, including detection and characterization of a large outbreak of AmpC-producing E. coli in hospitalized patients that had undergone endoscopic procedures. As Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at SCH, he seeks to optimize antibiotic usage for children locally, nationally and internationally by leveraging clinical microbiology data to inform antimicrobial stewardship interventions. Now, in partnership with the Washington State DOH and the UW Center for One Health Research, he is helping to build a database (Washington State Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance, WISAR) that aggregates antibiotic susceptibility testing data from bacterial isolates recovered in humans, animals and the environment.
