Joseph J. Eron Jr. MD is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He is an Oliver Smithies Investigator and an adjunct Professor of Epidemiology. He is the communicating Principal Investigator of the UNC NIH HIV Network Clinical Trials Unit and he is the co-Principal Investigator of the multicenter international AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). He is a clinical and tranlational scientist focused on all aspects of antiretroviral therapy including combination therapy, novel therapies, resistance emergence and acute infections. He is also interested in interventions to decrease HIV persistence and enhance control of residual replication. He led the development of the UNC CFAR HIV Clinical Cohort and has been a leader in the CNICS and NA-ACCORD collaborative cohorts. He remains an active HIV and Infectious Diseases clinician and most recently has helped rapidly develop antiviral treatment trials for SARS-CoV-2 infection in the outpatient setting.
