Born in 1959, I am married and father of three now adult children and grandfather of 3 lovely grand-kids. I play saxophone and sing in a jazz band and like to mountaineer.
I am Chairman and Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Bern University Hospital and Full Professor at University of Bern, Switzerland.
My research interests are closely related to my daily clinical work: Clinical and epidemiological aspects of HIV infection, opportunistic infections and antibiotic resistance in gram-negative bacteria. I am a member of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, of the steering committee of HIV and TB in Europe and of the Opportunistic Infection Working Group in COHERE.
Our department supports several HIV treatment projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and we run consultations in the Heroin and Methadone Clinics of Bern.
I work in the Swiss Expert Committee for Travel Medicine; the CDC/NIH/IDSA OI Management Guidelines Panel; the Swiss federal working Group for clinical and therapeutic aspects of HIV and STDs; the OI section of the EACS guidelines and I am member of the executive board of the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases.
My publication list consists of more than 350 peer reviewed papers.
