Dr. Durry is currently leading the Outbreak Preparedness and Response Cluster of Polio Eradication Branch (PEB), Global Immunization Division (GID) of the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC). Until April 2016, he was serving as an Emergency Advisor – Polio, Eastern Mediterranean Region Office (EMRO), World Health Organization (WHO) in Amman, Jordan, after serving four years as an Emergency Coordinator for polio eradication for WHO/Pakistan. Since 1996, he has worked with CDC and WHO in polio eradication, measles elimination, and strengthening immunization activities in most difficult and complex countries in Africa and the Middle East. As a CDC secondee to WHO, he served as Team Leader for polio eradication in countries including Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
He received an MD degree in Budapest, Hungary and an MPH degree at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine in Harrisburg, PA. In 1991, he joined CDC Atlanta as Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer.
Dr. Durry’s contribution to the polio eradication initiative is undoubtedly unique and exemplary. His technical knowledge and analytical capability allowed him to formulate innovative, but evidence based policies to achieve polio eradication in these difficult countries. His management and leadership quality allowed him to oversee the planning and utilization of large programs in Horn Africa, Nigeria and Pakistan. Throughout his assignment, Dr. Durry was able to bring together multiple partners under a common cause.
During his tenure, he succeeded to be a recognized leader in immunization and public health issues in developing countries by providing exceptional leadership and technical assistance. In 2013, Dr. Durry received the prestigious William C. Watson, Jr., Medal of Excellence for his tireless effort to eradicate polio.
